Family Tree Program

Do you or any of your family members:

  • Suffer from depression, trouble at work, out-of-control spending, extreme irritability, feelings of elation, substance abuse or even suicide attempts?
  • Receive treatment for depression, but are still not well?
  • Want to learn more about your family's mental health history?
  • Need a way to help your family understand that depressive disorders can be treated, and should not be considered a shameful family secret?

If so, then the Mental Health Family Tree Program may help you address these concerns.

Similar to other medical conditions like heart disease or certain cancers, bipolar disorder — sometimes called manic depression — often runs in families. The more you know about your family's mental health history, the more you can help a doctor get you or a family member well.

To help you uncover personal and family behavior patterns that may be associated with bipolar disorder, Families for Depression Awareness developed the Mental Health Family Tree builder. After completing a simple questionnaire, you can print an easy-to-read “family tree” that maps the existence of behaviors associated with bipolar disorder in your family. You can then share this family tree with your doctor or family. This builder is completely anonymous, and your personal information will not be saved.

If you have concerns about the existence of bipolar disorder in yourself or family members, build your Mental Health Family Tree and use the other helpful resources below. With an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment, you and your family can lead healthy and productive lives.
