Whitney Houston's Death: What Can We Learn?

whitney_singingWhitney Houston, the legendary singer and multiple Grammy-winner, was found dead in her hotel room on February 11, 2012.  Although we do not know what Whitney Houston's difficulties were beyond drug addiction, it is important for us to remember that drug problems and depression often go hand in hand.

More than 20% of people with depression engage in substance abuse (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), to "self medicate" or find temporary relief from the pain of the illness. In addition, a dual diagnosis of depression and drug abuse increases the risk of suicide by 20% (SAMSHA). It is important to make sure that someone who is abusing drugs gets dual-diagnosis treatment services for an underlying depressive disorder.

Our thoughts are with all of Houston's family, friends, and supporters during this difficult time.
