Tips for staying well

These behaviors contribute to a person with bipolar disorder staying well

  • Maintaining regular sleep and awake cycle
  • Staying on medications
  • Monitoring moods and symptoms, often with the aid of a caregiver who will support them in consulting their provider when changes may be needed
  • Continuing therapy and building coping and interpersonal skills
  • Not abusing alcohol or drugs
  • Addressing issues of physical health: managing stress; getting exercise, daily if possible; eating a balanced diet
  • Utilizing social and emotional supports, such as family, friends, peers, and support groups

Especially for caregivers

  • Have your own supports and strategies for self-care so you can continue to be compassionate and effective
  • Keep current in your knowledge about bipolar disorder so that you can help your loved one in advocating for care
