These behaviors contribute to a person with bipolar disorder staying well
- Maintaining regular sleep and awake cycle
- Staying on medications
- Monitoring moods and symptoms, often with the aid of a caregiver who will support them in consulting their provider when changes may be needed
- Continuing therapy and building coping and interpersonal skills
- Not abusing alcohol or drugs
- Addressing issues of physical health: managing stress; getting exercise, daily if possible; eating a balanced diet
- Utilizing social and emotional supports, such as family, friends, peers, and support groups
Especially for caregivers
- Have your own supports and strategies for self-care so you can continue to be compassionate and effective
- Keep current in your knowledge about bipolar disorder so that you can help your loved one in advocating for care
