Teen Speakers

Young adults who tell their stories of depression and bipolar disorder.

Our Teen Speakers Program provides teens and young adults with opportunities to share their personal stories of living with depression or bipolar disorder. These stories are shared in schools and communities to encourage other young people to seek help. They dispel misconceptions about people affected by mood disorders, alleviate the social stigma around mental health issues, and encourage help-seeking by those who may be having difficulties.

Participation in the Teen Speakers program helps to develop confidence and public speaking skills for our teens as they become emissaries for mental health awareness and wellness. Our speakers have appeared on Good Morning America and PBS, and speak at schools, clubs, and community events. To become a Teen Speaker, fill out a volunteer form.

Teen Speakers Events (MA only)

Recent and upcoming Teen Speakers events include

  • presentations for students at Newton North High School and for parents at the Just Think Expo
  • a panel discussion for students and parents in Winchester
  • a program at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association conference in Westborough
  • a presentation for students at the Regis College School of Nursing
  • a program for students at the Bristol-Plymouth Regional High School
  • presentations for high school students in Billerica

Teen Speakers are available to speak to your school, community group, or club! Events are facilitated by our staff along with our teen and young adult volunteers and tailored to meet the needs of your group. Our staff will discuss with your event planners in advance any specific concerns you feel should be addressed. We will then handpick a speaker or speakers whose life experience and personal story fits well with your group’s needs or interests. The format of the event will be determined with your event planner in advance and may include panel interviews, large group discussion, small group discussion, question and answer, video, and/or musical performance depending on your needs and our volunteer availability.

Each program typically lasts 60 minutes. Request Teen Speakers for your event.

Our Teen Speakers use their stories to help others! We are actively recruiting new volunteers between the ages of 14-24. Sign up today to help us bring our program to communities throughout Massachusetts so more youth can get the help they need to be well! Contact me at Ari@Familyaware.org to learn more.
